How to change your Gmail profile picture
Your Gmail profile picture is managed through your Google Account. Use the steps below to change it, then prepare a square image or animated sender avatar that still looks clean when it appears tiny in the inbox.
Change it on desktop
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- Open Personal info.
- Under Basic info, choose Profile picture.
- Upload a photo from your computer or choose one from Google Photos.
- Crop or rotate the image, then continue.
- Choose Save as profile picture.
Google may adjust labels or layout over time, but the profile picture setting lives in your Google Account personal info area.
Change it on mobile
- Open Gmail or another Google app and tap your current picture or initials.
- Choose Manage your Google Account.
- Open Personal info and tap Profile picture.
- Choose or take a new photo, center it in the square crop, and save it.
If your account is managed by a school or company, your Workspace administrator may limit profile photo changes.

Image checklist
- Use a square image so the crop is predictable.
- Keep the logo or face centered with enough empty space around it.
- Avoid tiny text because Gmail sender images appear very small.
- Save a static fallback if you also test an animated GIF.
- Send yourself a test email before using the new picture widely.
Want a more noticeable sender icon?
Gmailogo turns a logo or profile image into a compact animated GIF for sender-avatar testing. Preview first, then pay only if the result is useful.

Google controls where profile pictures animate and where they appear as a still frame. If your new profile image uploads but does not behave as expected, troubleshoot the file size, square crop, first frame, and fallback image.
